Ball skills - normal development

These are approximate milestones for development. Children vary considerably and therefore some children may be throwing and catching earlier or later than others. This does not indicate any difficulties, just variation. If you are concerned please discuss this with your family doctor or health visitor. 

Throwing 

 
Throws ball into a basket 60cm away - 2 years  
 
Throws ball stiffly from one hand at body level - 2.6 years
 
Begins to throw a ball overhand - 3 years
 
Can throw underhand to about 6m - 3 years
 
Can throw with accuracy - 6 years
 
Skilful in throwing with one hand - 7 years
 

Catching 

 
Catches by chasing ball - does not respond to arial ball - 2 years
 
Catches ball between extended arms - 3 years
 
Can bounce a ball  - 4 years
 
Plays a variety of ball games with considerable agility  - 5 years
 
Catches small balls using hands only - 5 years
 
Can bounce and catch a ball - 5 years
 
Skilful catching using one hand - 7 years
 

Kicking

 
Walks into a large ball - 2 years
